K drama or to be more specific Korean drama is a kind of drama produced and developed in South Korea. The syllable ‘K’ signifies its prominent language Hangul which is translated into Korean. These have been quite famous since their inception, but they have taken over the world since the COVID-19 period. People have to come to know about it and they love it to the extent that they binge-watch it.
What is so eye-capturing?
These dramas were generally based on romantic comedies or romance but recently, they have started covering issues like identity disorders, depression, isolation, and almost all psychological conditions that cease to exist.
These are becoming more relatable day by day and therefore, people are becoming more and more interested in them. For example, 'Nevertheless', is based on college life and the complicated relationships or situations one has to go through nowadays in order to be in a stable dating phase.
People, more specifically, today’s generation find it more relatable as they go through similar and sometimes the exact situation in their lives.
Covering all the genres?
K-dramas are not only based on romantic comedies but also on fiction which provide us with a fulfilling feeling or to be more specific empathy. The dramas based on fiction are not only dreamy but they even give us a visual aspect with regard to putting ourselves in other’s shoes. This is another major reason why it is so popular.
Doom at Your Service, is based on two characters, Tak Dong Kyung a female who lost her parents and is struggling with brain cancer, and another supernatural entity which is called Doom. It’s based on their complicated relationship and how they overcome it while facing the problems we cannot imagine to exist.
There are many examples like these that force us to put ourselves in other’s perspective and make us realize the different values and issues.
All aspects?
Does this cover all aspects? Yes, it does. More recently, the country itself has become more open-minded and has started considering people of all genders. They have a whole different genre dedicated to the LGBTIA+ community. It’s called ‘BL’ or to be more specific ‘Boy’s Love.’ Back in March of 2023, they released a series called ‘The Eighth Sense’, it was the first bl show with one-hour episodes. This is a huge achievement because there are gay shows but they are of 5 to 6 episodes each and they are hardly half an hour long.
The K- drama industry has started to consider all genders equal and it shows in their movies and series. They have started including side characters which are Lesbian, Bisexual, or Gay. There is a lot to be achieved but for the time being, it’s good progress. South Korea, is a traditional and cultural country, and this change is quite a leap for them.
These dramas have something in common. Which is innovation and creativity. They not only provide us with fictional, romantic, and comedy content but they also give us a genre that is quite diverse in its own aspect. One such proof of this is a drama called ‘The Sound of Magic.’ It’s a musical and it is a must if you want to explore the industry of Korean Dramas.
